Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting My Blog

I started my blog properly back in December, but even then I didn’t know what I was properly doing. To this day, six months on, I’m still learning. Blogging is a constant learning process.

Back in December when I properly started blogging I didn’t really have any idea what I was doing in all honesty. I knew that I wanted to blog as I had posted a few posts previously, but that was the extent of it.

Six months into blogging and I feel as though I’ve learned quite a bit, though there is still so much that I need learn about blogging. By no means am I an expert but I hope this helps nonetheless!

  • Twitter Chats

I wish I knew about twitter before I started my blog because then that would mean that I’d be able to promote my first blog post. This would have been a great way for me to reel in potential readers! I don’t take part in many twitter chats – I usually end up missing them – but they’re my favourite way of connecting with other bloggers! I didn’t really know about them at the before I started blogging because it’s such a good way to chat and connect with other bloggers.

  • Social Media

Social media is the best way to get your blog across to others and get yourself out there. Without social media it would be extremely difficult to get other people to read your blog posts. Twitter is the best social media for me and I’ve yet to get the hang of Pinterest! I wish I knew this beforehand because I feel as though it would have helped me to launch my blog using a separate twitter account and get into the blogging community a lot quicker, if that even makes sense!

  • Niches

It’s okay not knowing your niche yet. Knowing your niche is important for attracting the right readers but it’s also okay to dabble in more than one niche at the beginning, then narrowing it down further. I currently dabble in lifestyle, personal, positivity and wellbeing as well as beauty every so often. Oh, and also I enjoy writing book reviews too and anything else related to books/writing. Although my niche isn’t narrowed down to a few yet, I’m simply trying to have fun with my blog!

  • Blog success

Don’t expect success straight away or overnight. Success doesn’t come easy and it will take a lot of hard work on your own part. You’ll have to constantly promote yourself in order to get yourself out there. I’m only six months in and I’m by no means successful, I’m still a very small blogger myself! I know that some people become more successful more quickly, but that isn’t something that should discourage you at all. Hard work will pay off eventually as long as you are consistent for the majority of the time.

  • Growing readers

Linked to my last point, it’s best to grow your following of readers authentically in order to gain success rather than buying followers. I’d rather have less followers who are authentic than more followers which are bot followers. That’s just my opinion anyway.

  • Blog images

Images are important. It’s great spending time writing a great blog post but adding an image is more likely to attract readers, that’s what I’ve read somewhere anyway. This is when Instagram/Pinterest comes into handy but this isn’t something that I currently use often, although I know that I should get better at it.

I hope you found this useful/interesting!

  1. yes, these are basic things that every blogger must have. Also, some copyrighting and image editing skills are necessary to do blogging. will be creating a tutorial for this soon.
