I remember when I was younger being told that I’d grow out of writing. Growing up I’ve always seemed to have the idea in the back of my mind that I would never be able to make it as a writer, or that I simply wasn’t good enough. So, I’ve kept my dream of being a writer on the low down, it’s just a dream right? (Wrong!)
Being a writer isn’t easy, and nothing frustrates me more than people who think it is easy. Writing is just as hard as the next job.
Why is writing difficult? That’s a question some people may ask, but the answer isn’t simple. Writing is difficult for many reasons and not just because of the writing. There are many other processes outside the writing process that make it a difficult process as a whole.
The reality of being a writer is that it’s more than just the writing. In the grand scheme of things, the writing process is only a small part of it. You have to come up with a good idea. You have to plan, research and outline the idea before you even start writing it. After you’ve finished writing, your piece of fiction needs editing and perfecting. That’s all without finding an agent/publisher and marketing your book if it gets published.
Every part of the process is time consuming to say the least. It isn’t easy in the slightest, if it was easy then everybody would be doing it. There’s a lot of competition out there, even once you have your book published and so being a writer is tough. Even J. K. Rowling was rejected numerous times before her book was accepted by a publisher.
I suppose what I’m trying to say is that being a writer takes a lot of motivation, determination and perseverance. It isn’t easy in the slightest, but I’m determined, even if I don’t write every single day.

You’re absolutely right. So many things are difficult about writing. The writing itself. Re-drafting. Planning. Editing. Promoting. The self-doubt. The over-thinking. Sometimes it gets to a point where you question why you chose to be a writer – or at least for me – but then I remember that I couldn’t do anything else even if I wanted to. So even though it is one of the hardest things, it’s also one of the best.

I agree! Lot’s of people think writing is an easy task, it really isn’t. I’ve been writing my book for years and it’s still nowhere near complete! Great post xx

Great post, thanks for sharing! So many people think being a writer is simple but I agree with you, so much work goes into everything writers do. I would love to publish a poetry book some day, I’m always writing poems and bits of stories in my free time.

I agree! Growing up I wanted to be a writer, but no one thought it could be a career. It is really tough to be a writer, but I love writing, and it is worth a shot! 🙂
