Next month is the month of NaNoWriMo. For those that may not be familiar with this term, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month and it occurs every year in the month of November.
This year I had planned to take part in NaNoWriMo. I really wanted to give it a good shot because I enjoy a challenge, however difficult it may be. That’s why I’ve taken up blogtober this year – because it’s a challenge for me.
I started planning for NaNoWriMo back in the beginning of September. In all honesty I was excited for it, even if planning could be tedious now and again. I was excited for the idea I had in mind to develop. But with my new job and everything else going on in my life I eventually decided to give NaNoWriMo a miss.
Writing a story isn’t easy in the slightest. It’s difficult, and you can check out my blog post on the reality of being a writer to find out why. Planning consumes a lot of time. The writing process consumes a lot of time. All of this time that I simply don’t have with my new job since I’m working full time. Writing isn’t something I want to force at the end of the day – everyone needs time to relax.
NaNoWriMo just wasn’t for me this year, and I’m not sure if it will ever be for me. I would much rather write at my own pace, that way I wouldn’t feel as though I was rushing my story. I’m sure that NaNoWriMo works for a lot of people, but it’s definitely not for me.
In no way am I bashing NaNoWriMo, like I said it can be a great motivator for a lot of people. Maybe if I wasn’t so busy with my job and home life I would have been able to get involved, but just in a slightly different way. Maybe another time I will, who knows. But for this year it would be too much of a challenge for me.
