Starting a blog isn’t as easy as it sounds, there are a few things to consider beforehand. By no means am I an expert in blogging or blogging successfully, but I wanted to share my advice in the hopes that it will help someone out.
WordPress vs Blogger
Before you even create your blog you need to consider the platform that you want your blog on. The two main contenders for this are WordPress (.wordpress.com) and Blogger (.blogspot.com), but you can use whichever site you prefer for your blog. You can always migrate your blog if you don’t like the platform you originally chose.
Choose a blog name
Before you even set up your blog or begin creating content for your blog, it’s important to come up with a name for your blog, something that people will remember your blog by. This is an important step – you want to pick a blog name that you’re happy to stick with!
You don’t need a niche
It’s okay not to fit into a niche. If you decide to take the plunge to blog then don’t worry about fitting into a niche – your blog is yours at the end of the day, write whatever YOU want for your blog! At the same time, if your blog does fit into a niche then that’s okay too!
Blog for the right reasons
Don’t blog because you want ‘freebies’ or for money, that’s not a great reason to start blogging. Blog because you want to blog, blog because you have a passion about something whether that be mental health or travel. Blogging isn’t as easy as you may think it is.
Social media is your bestfriend
Social media is important for your blog – it’s the best way to promote the content that you create and to connect/interact with other bloggers within the community. The best way to get involved in the blogging community is to take part in blogger chats – there’s different blogger chats that take place each day at different times!
Don’t compare yourself to other blogs
Remember that you’re only just starting out on your blog, whilst others may have built their blogs up over several years to get to the stage that they’re at. Building your blog up takes time, it’s not something that’s going to happen overnight. Patience and persistence is key here, but comparing yourself to others is only going to make you doubt yourself.
Blogging isn’t easy, there’s no doubt about that. It takes a lot of hard work, persistence and dedication to grow your blog but it can definitely be worth it.

Really useful advice here. I’d add to that get your social media in order too to help promote your posts and also build a network of bloggers for support.

These are all great tips. I love the “You don’t need a niche” one especially. I hate when I see articles like this and they’re telling new bloggers to find their niche. It really isn’t necessary and bloggers can blog about any topic they want. That’s what I do, and I like that it adds more versatility to my blog.

Thank you! As much as having a niche can be great for a blog, at the same time it’s not the end of the world if you don’t have a niche!

Depends what your reason for starting a blog is. Mine’s a long term investment that I aim to make money from but I’m still passionate about my subject matter ❤ great advice x

I totally agree, it definitely depends! At least you’re still passionate about your subject matter! Thank you x

I always feel like I should have achieved more by now with my blog. The world is so obsessed with seo, domain authority numbers, your social media followers and god knows what else. It can bring you down.
But this reminded me that I don’t do it for any other reason than the fact I like to do it. It’s for me and the people who choose to read it.
It’s hard not to compare yourself to others but I guess you’re right. You shouldn’t have to.

These are all really good tips but I think the most important point you have made is about not comparing yourself to other blogs, you have no idea how much work someone puts in to their blog to get to where they are.

I definitely don’t have a niche. My blog is about as random as they come. Although I do find people prefer my fashion and food posts the most. And yes, social media is definitely our best friend. Great post and blog.

Pretty useful advice. Easy to follow. It’s crazy how easy it is to get lost comparing ourselves to other blogs. My wife and I just started one this week and get discouraged by lack of interest and traffic. Granted we are new and have a small circle to begin with. But still, the thought of someday offering a blog with interesting , useful, or funny content is what we want at the end of the day and to engage with a lot of users. You seem to be doing a great job and hopefully we’ll get there some day as well. Nice post!
