In light of recent events, I felt compelled to write a blog post on mental health. Just over a week ago when this blog post goes live, we found out the heartbreaking news that the well known presenter Caroline Flack died by suicide at the age of 40. I couldn’t quite believe it when I read the news. This news struck me to say the least.
The truth is, you never truly know what is going on in people’s lives. The last thing that Caroline Flack posted on her instagram was a happy picture with her dog. But that clearly wasn’t the case. On social media we have a tendency to post our highlight reels, the things that are going well in our lives. It’s not very often that people will post about their struggles, such as with their mental health.
We can spread awareness about mental health as often as we like, but at the same time it’s also important to act. If you know a family member, a friend, or anybody who is suffering from mental health, then please reach out to them and give them the support that they need before it’s too late. If somebody reaches out to you for support and help, please don’t dismiss them. Take them seriously. They’ve reached out to you for a reason because they trust you.
No one wants to feel like no one is listening to them or taking them seriously. No one wants to feel alone.
Life can already be tough with pressures coming from all directions. We shouldn’t make other people’s lives difficult when we have no idea about their struggles or how things will impact them. At the end of the day, we should all be kind to one another. Check on your friends and check on your family members. Check on those close to you and make sure they’re ok.
Mental health is important. Mental health matters.
